This June was the coolest in the past three years. Let’s take 80°F as a threshold bench mark. We only had four days that were at or above 80°F. In 2010 there were seven days and in 2009 we had 18 days at or above this mark. Spring 2010 was also cool and wet period as this year was. Of course this does not set precedence and there is no trend; not with three years of observation.
Precipitation was at 0.53” for the month while in 2010 we were wet with 2.06” and in 2009 we were at 0.95” comparable to this year; less than an inch. Wind events were negligible at only three gusts 25 mph or higher.
I did not turn on the lawn irrigation system until June which is a few weeks later than normal. Our seasonal wild grasses have been prolific and some are starting to cure out. This is always a concern as they are great fire fuel.

Bob, maybe it was a gravity wave affecting the clouds? I supposed that can't be it as you described a thunder head... great capture regardless! We were cool and wet over here in June as well. We've had heat and high dew points all of July though. Summer is in top form.
ReplyDeleteWas the impression at a single point or in several waves? I've often seen waves of upside down ripples across the bottoms of clouds. These are called undulattice, I believe. But I also saw last summer one spot that looked as you described this. Like a confused twister with vortex upside down.
ReplyDeleteOk, I just realized I've exposed my great talent for creative spelling. That should be "undulatus" in the last comment.
ReplyDeleteAlso, this may be of interest, about a newly recognized and rare formation, of which your photo may depict the beginning.
